to the Bricks -2010 Review - Updated 9/1/2010 |

In my previous ‘Back to the Bricks’ 2010 review, I reported that the police only issued twelve tickets over the two-day period of the ‘Rolling Cruise’. At today’s committee wrap up, several police agencies joined us in the review and what I reported was in error. What was reported to us is the following; twelve people were arrested for various offenses such as public drunkenness, disorderly conduct, two drug offenses and public urination. As for driving offenses, there were more than twelve as previously reported. Tickets that were issued were for speeding, excessive noise (burn-outs), reckless driving, improper turns (mainly U-turns which we were told all U-turns are illegal in Michigan), etc. We were assured no tickets were given for revving of engines, neon lights, or blue dot taillights. They also reported that there were several officers walking the beat and if they witnessed someone doing something illegal with their cars, they would radio their fellow officers in the cruiser and had the driver pulled over. If you saw an individual being pulled over for no apparent reason, this is what most likely happened. It was also reported to the committee at no given time were more than forty officers working the entire cruise route and this works out to about two-and-half officers per mile.
The bottom line is we wanted to keep the event free of injury to all and our goal was accomplished. If you were one of the unfortunate to get a ticket we can understand your displeasure. But with that said, the cruise route had large digital signs warning all drivers not to participate in burn-outs or public consumption of alcohol. There were PSA’s (Public Service Announcements) on all of the major radio station and full TV coverage of the news conference regarding public safety. And since early 2010, each of my monthly updates ended with a statement concerning ‘zero tolerance’ regarding burn-outs and public consumption of alcohol. Each update is posted on our website: backtothebricks.org under the news section. No one can claim that they were not forewarned.
In closing, we have identified a few areas that need attention but not a lot. We have received written letters of praise from the National Street Rod Association, Car Clubs from both the U.S. and Canada, Shirley Muldowney, civic leaders and more that this is one of the best run and organized shows in the United States and we thank all of those who contributed to making this year’s event the ‘Best Ever’ ‘Back to the Bricks’. When I make a mistake such as reporting the number of tickets to be only 12, I take full responsibility for the error. Blame me if you wish but don’t get on the police for doing their job. I am sure that those of you who have leveled the most criticism would also be the first to take legal action if one of your family members would have gotten injured by an out of control cruiser. Enough said and time to move on.
Cordially, Al Hatch, Chairman
